The Sierra del Perija or Perija mountain range is the northernmost branch of the Cordillera de los Andes. It is also known, mainly in its south, as the Motilones highlands, and includes other mountain systems such as the Serrania de Valledupar, and Oca mountains.
Marks the border between Colombia and Venezuela, the Colombian departments of Norte de Santander, Cesar and La Guajira to the west and the Venezuelan state of Zulia to the east. The eastern part belongs to the basin of Lake Maracaibo and it highlights the Catatumbo River. The western slope corresponds mainly to the Cesar River Basin (Colombian only river that flows south, a tributary of the Magdalena) and the Rancheria river that flows directly into the Caribbean Sea.

Río Caribe is called by some gentlemen of the City of Cocoa, for there is Hacienda Agua Santa, where it is grown for domestic consumption and international the best cocoa in the country. Visitors can learn about the process, from planting to drying of cocoa, guided tours that culminate with a chocolate tasting cup prepared on the estate.
Río Caribe is a fishing port of high importance to the state. In addition to the planting of cocoa, also made small agro-industrial activities with production and processing of bananas and corn. A 30 km of the coast, lies a major gas basins with reserves of light oil.

Sucre state defined by the range, a characteristic trait of its people and its geography.
