The Sierra del Perija or Perija mountain range is the northernmost branch of the Cordillera de los Andes. It is also known, mainly in its south, as the Motilones highlands, and includes other mountain systems such as the Serrania de Valledupar, and Oca mountains.
Marks the border between Colombia and Venezuela, the Colombian departments of Norte de Santander, Cesar and La Guajira to the west and the Venezuelan state of Zulia to the east. The eastern part belongs to the basin of Lake Maracaibo and it highlights the Catatumbo River. The western slope corresponds mainly to the Cesar River Basin (Colombian only river that flows south, a tributary of the Magdalena) and the Rancheria river that flows directly into the Caribbean Sea.
