The Rio Chama is one of the major rivers in Venezuela. It has a length of more than 200 km and is located in Merida, the main river of the entity. Chama River Basin covers more than 3517 km ² and an estimated annual flow upstream of 458.19l every second.

The Chama River is born in the desert of Mucuchies near Eagle Peak at an approximate height of 4,000 meters and is a tributary of Lake Maracaibo.

Chama River follows the course of the fault tectonics Boconó, it separates the Sierra Nevada National Park  from the Sierra La Culata, both in the Cordillera de Mérida, creating a vast valley seat of an important number of cities and towns that are San Rafael de Mucuchíes stand, Tabay, the city of Merida and The Watcher. From the 1990s it has reported a possible population decline of the butterfly Papilio Polyxena, formerly common in the middle of the Chama River. It has been shown that nematodes Radopholus similis, Pratylenchus coffeae, Helicotylenchus multicinctus and Meloidogyne sp. found in banana plantations on the left bank of the Rio Chama, Colon County, Zulia State, both in the roots and soil, while the Criconemoides sp. found himself on the floor.
